99-66  Call to Order and Opening Prayer

The Called Meeting of Gulf Coast Presbytery was called to order at 12:10 PM (CDT) on Tuesday, November 9 1999, at the First Presbyterian Church, Niceville, Florida, by the Moderator, RE W. M. Harris, IV. Mr. Harris led in the opening prayer.

99-68  Communications

1. Letter from TEs J. Cavanah, P. Frick, R. Hayes and REs R. Post and R. Wilson requesting that presbytery be called to meet for the purpose of conducting the trial of ordination for Mr. W. Channell and examining and receiving TE Young E. Song. The call was found to be in order and the meeting to be a properly called meeting. (Appendix A)

 

2. Requests for excuse absence from S. Bradford, E. J. Foster, R. Gardner, H. A. Maves, granted.

 

99-69  Adoption of Docket

The docket was approved as presented (Appendix B).

99-70  Examinations—TE J. Cavanah, II, Chairman

TE J. Cavanah presented the report of the Examination’s Committee.

1.  Examination of Mr. Wesley Channell

 

Mr. Cavanah introduced Mr. Wesley Channell, pastor-elect of the First Presbyterian Church, Atmore, AL. Mr. Channell is a graduate of Peabody and Beeson Divinity School.

 

Mr, Cavanah reported that Mr. Channell has satisfactorly completed the written and oral examination by the Examinations Committee. Prebytery voted to proceed with the examination.

Mr. Channell preached a sermon before presbytery using as his text Deuteronomy 32:7-14 and titled, “The One and Only.” There were no questions from the floor. This portion of the examination was arrested.

Mr. Cavanah examined Mr. Channell in the area of Christian Experience and call to the Ministry. There were no questions from the floor. This portion of the examination was arrested.

 

Mr. Schneider examined Mr. Channell in English Bible. After questions from the floor, this portion of the examination was arrested.

 

Mr. Schneider examined Mr. Channell in theology. After questions from the floor, this portion of the examination was arrested.

 

Mr. Cavanah examined Mr.Channell in the Sacraments. There were no questions from the floor. This portion of the examination was arrested.

 

Mr. Frick examined Mr. Channell in church history and history of the PCA. There were no questions from the floor. This portion of the examination was arrested.

 

Mr. Cavanah examined Mr. Channell in church polity. After questions from the floor, this portion of the examination was arrested.

 

Mr. Cavanah reported that Mr. Channell had submitted the required exegetical and theology papers and a sermon manuscript. These were examined by the committee and found to be satisfactory. This portion of the examination was arrested.

 

Presbytery accepted Mr. Channell’s seminary courses in the original languages in place of oral examinations on the floor.

 

Presbytery sustained Mr. Channell’s examination as a whole and approved him for ordination to the gospel ministry.

 

RE C. Dettling prosecuted the call in behalf of the First Presbyterian Church, Atmore. The call was found to be in order and placed in Mr. Channell’s hands. Mr. Channell accepted the terms of the call.  (Appendix)

 

Presbytery appointed the following commission  (Quorum-2TE/2RE) for the purpose of ordaining and installing Mr. Wesley Channel on Saturday, December 4, 1999 at 4:00 PM: TEs P. Frick, S. Wallace, R. Fennig and REs C. Dettling, J. Corman, R. Johnson and D. Bilbo. TE M. MacLaughlty, Evangel Presbytery was invited to participate in the ordination service.

 

2.Examination of TE Young E. Song.

 

Mr. Cavanah introduced TE Dr. Young E. Song, pastor-elect of the Panama City Korean Church. Mr. Young is a member-in-good-standing of Eastern Korean Prebytery, PCUSA.  Presbytery voted to proceed with the examination.

 

Mr. Cavanah examined Dr. Song in the area of Christian experience and call to the Gospel ministry. After questions from the floor, this portion of the examination was arrested.

 

Mr. Schneider examined Dr. Song in the area of views of theology. After questions from the floor, this portion of the examination was arrested.

 

Mr. Cavanah examined Dr. Song in the area of views of the sacraments. After questions from the floor, this portion of the examination was arrested.

 

Mr. Cavanah conducted the examination in the are of view of church polity. There were no questions from the floor. This portion of the examination was arrested.

 

Dr. Song takes no exceptions to the Confession, Catechism or Book of Church Order.

 

The Moderator posed the ordination questions from the BCO which were answered in the affirmative by Dr. Young.

 

Presbytery sustained the examination as a whole and received TE Young E. Song, pending dismissal, as a member of Gulf Coast Presbytery.

 

TE R. Hayes, a member of the Interim Session, prosecuted the call in behalf of the Panama City Korean Church. The call was approved and placed into Dr. Young’s hands.  Dr. Young accepted the terms of the call.

 

The following were appointed to a commission (Quorum 2RE/2TE) for the purpose of installing TE Young E. Song on Sunday, November 28, 1999 at 3:30 PM: TEs R. Hayes, B. Johnston, D. Anderegg and REs R. Post, R. Webb and R. Haley.

 

The Examinations Committee report was approved as a whole.

 

99-71  Adjournment and Closing Prayer

Presbytery adjourned at 3:00 PM. TE W. Tyson led in the closing prayer.
